Noodles!!
Perhaps I get excited easily, but I am *SO* excited about the next dinner on Sat 10th April!!
The reason you might well ask? Because I am making one of the most iconic dishes from Beijing: handmade noodles with yellow bean sauce!!!
This is THE dish any Beijinger would tell you sums up Beijing. And no matter how much I love living in London, Beijing will always be home.
The Northern Chinese are known to the rest of China for being straight talking, friendly and in some ways, simple. And nothing sums up all of these qualities better than a bowl of noodles.
Noodles in China also mean long life – and people especially believe this in Northern China. Families for example, will make noodles for their loved one’s birthday to wish them a long life. The yellow bean sauce is generally made from yellow soybean with either pork or beef, so it’s both nutrient and healthy. And in my family, we make a good veggie version too!
The one thing I always end up craving when in the UK, has always been yellow bean noodles. I couldn’t be happier when I recently discovered that Wing Yip now sells yellow bean sauce!! It’s the wet version, but it’s certainly better than nothing!!
So yes. I *like* this dish.
Guests – be prepared to be inspired!!!
Love,
Mama Lan
